The Priority Areas Panel
As one of our three SDO advisory panels, members of the Priority Areas Panel meet the challenge of commissioning high quality research relevant to NHS needs. The Priority Areas Panel considers the need for research in a number of broad thematic areas, identified through the programme's research needs assessment and prioritisation processes.
The Priority Areas Panel's remit includes assisting with the development of commissioning briefs, as well as assessing areas of importance and need to the NHS within the SDO remit. Those applications judged to have reached an NHS importance threshold will be short-listed for full proposal submission to the Commissioning Board.
How the Priority Area Panel works

The role of a Priority Area Panel member
The Priority Areas Panel member's role comprises two main functions:
- To refine research questions and commissioning briefs to be advertised
- To assess applications received for NHS need and importance
The Priority Areas Panel work closely with the Programme Executive Group (PEG), which is chaired by the Programme Director and includes the chairs of all three advisory panels.
