Projects in progress
Your project has been funded because it addresses an important question that the NHS needs answering, so it is important that your research progresses as quickly and smoothly as possible. NETSCC, SDO can help you with this by providing appropriate support and advice. By closely monitoring project performance and providing support where it is needed, NETSCC, SDO helps to ensure that research projects are both successful and timely.
We keep in touch with the research teams in a number of ways:
- project welcome meetings
- regular and ad hoc progress reports
- teleconferences and on-site visits
Progress reports are one of the most important ways we keep in touch with research teams so that we can provide support when it is needed.
Researchers are required to submit progress reports every six months. The report is read thoroughly and a response is given.
Researchers are encouraged to create a ‘user friendly' document that provides all relevant and requested information to enable us to:
- review progress against a project plan
- review the impact of any issues
- identify any need for additional support

Occasionally, a project team may need to request additional time and/or money in order to complete their project. A framework exists for managing requests for additional resources and for reaching equitable decisions. Please note that requests for an extension will only be considered once the completed form has been received. An electronic copy of the extension request form can also be found here:

Once your project has started we will allow the project details and protocol to be accessible on our website. We therefore request that you use the template below to submit your approved study protocol. Please note that the sub-headings included in the template are there as a suggestion only.

It is also important that you give us advance notice of all published work related to your project, throughout the course of the research. Please refer to your contract for further details. Click here to find out more.
Research governance - obtaining necessary permissions
The Health Services Research Network has produced a useful guide for researchers which explains the steps a researcher needs to follow to begin a study. It covers topics such as clarifying if a study qualifies as research, peer review, funding and obtaining a sponsor and gaining all the relevant permissions to carry out that research.
